Diaper rash, also known as diaper dermatitis, is a very common skin ailment. It generally can appear from the ages of two to four months until your child outgrows diapers. Summers Labs' Triple Paste Medicated Ointment is used at leading children's hospitals across the U.S. and by many pediatricians and dermatologists for their own children.
The first portion of this page explains about Triple Paste (obviously we are biased!), followed by general information for preventing and treating diaper rash.
Many doctors use Triple Paste on their own children.
Here is what they say about it:
"I first used Triple Paste on my own son's resistant diaper rash... I was amazed that the rash resolved in 24 hours." Pediatrician, Central NJ
"Triple Paste is wonderful. It improves diaper rash over night." Pediatrician, Morristown, NJ
"After just one application, my daughter's redness and irritation often disappear!" Dermatologist, Baltimore, MD
"Nothing worked better on my kid's bottom." Pediatrician, Brookline, MA
"I have 1 year old twins. I have had great results with Triple Paste. I use it every day." Pediatrician, Baldwin, NY
Diaper rash first appears as redness or chafing of skin covered by the diaper. If left untreated, the skin will become more raw and irritated. You may notice oozing and dampness in the skin folds. Severe cases can develop open sores. If ignored, severe diaper rash can lead to widespread infection by bacteria, yeast or fungus.
Certain conditions can cause diaper rash or make it more difficult to heal. Frequent loose bowel movements containing harsh digestive juices often cause diaper rash. Heat and humidity also add to the problem. Prolonged warm, moist conditions can cause the normally harmless germs present in this area to grow more rapidly in skin folds and irritate your child's skin.
Some Suggestions for Preventing Diaper Rash
- Use plastic and rubber pants for only short periods of time or special occasions. Do not use them overnight.
- After each diaper change, gently clean the diaper area. A mild cleanser may be used, taking care to gently cleanse and thoroughly rinse skin folds. Any cleanser remaining in the skin folds can cause further irritation.
- Dry the skin and skin folds thoroughly.
- Use a cornstarch based powder two or three times daily to keep the affected areas dry.
- If you believe your child will be experiencing a prolonged period of loose stools (such as at the start of an antibiotic prescription), substitute the cornstarch powder with a thin coating of Triple Paste medicated ointment. This will provide a much greater degree of protection from irritation and prevent diaper rash from occurring.
How to Clear Diaper Rash Once It Has Occurred
-
Apply a thin layer of Triple Paste before bed and after bathing. Triple Paste is recommended by pediatricians and dermatologists and is available without prescription for moderate to severe diaper rash.
-
If possible, allow your child to remain naked for several hours a day. As one noted dermatologist described, "there cannot be a diaper rash without diapers". Keeping the affected area dry is important for healing.
-
At night, use a double layer of soft cotton diapers, loosely pinned. Do not use rubber or plastic pants.
-
Your pediatrician may prescribe an additional medication to use with Triple Paste. Always use Triple Paste AFTER applying other skin medications; Triple Paste will help keep the treated area protected and allow the medication to work.
How to Purchase Triple Paste
SPECIAL TIP: Triple Paste is formulated to offer maximum protection from irritants. Because of its persistent formula, Triple Paste is very difficult to wash off with soap and water. Baby oil (mineral oil) can be used to gently remove Triple Paste, though this may not be necessary with every changing.
